Curlan Campbell

Curlan Campbell is a freelance journalist working in Grenada for the past 15 years. While being a young and upcoming journalist, Mr. Campbell in 2014 was awarded Journalist of the year. In 2017, He was elected to serve as 1nd Vice President of the Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG), in which he served in that capacity for one year and was subsequently re-elected to serve a second time as 2nd Vice President. He is known to be active within his community by connecting and engaging with residents to identifying problems with a view of finding solutions. He also has a passion for reporting on human interest stories and environmental issues and his published work has been featured on a number of platforms including The Phoenix Newspaper based in the UK for 2023 International Women’s Day.

Prison – a Destination for Young Men?

Instead of sitting in a classroom, 17-year-old “John” now sits in the Grand Bacolet Juvenile Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre. This center in St Andrew can be considered a detention center for juveniles in conflict with the law. John is serving 9 months after being sentenced by a Juvenile court for committing acts of housebreaking, stealing and drug possession. Additionally, he is facing additional penalties for escaping from the facility. This is not John’s first time at Grand Bacolet.
