Mysterious Real Estate Projects in the Caribbean
The landscape of the Caribbean region countries is marred by real estate projects – resorts, hotels and office buildings never finished, barely started or partially completed. Often the investors and owners are obscured by a web of companies and transactions and no one is sure who owns the mystery buildings. And often it is unclear why government officials encouraged the projects or did not take effective actions to intervene when the projects stalled.
But what is not obscure are the buildings and resorts that sit like tombstones of failure, threatening the environment, encouraging crime and the disappointing residents who lost land to the developments or never got the jobs promised by the projects.
These stories seek to shed more light on why these buildings arose, who has planned and financed them, why the projects stalled and what governments have done or not done to address the issues and problems the buildings have created.
